Hiking Big & Small
see horizon line
separates river & sky
my horizon small
Cypress trees have knees
Reaching out for nitrogen
clay & bugs give in
squishy chunks of clay
massive blue & tourquise paint
rough to touch it ain’t
Snake skin left behind
u shaped curves wrapping around
decomposing leaves
There’s a dead mino
in the middle of the sand
washed up by the shore
(trampled by a horse)
focused in on small
itsy bitsy grains of sand
sparkles in the sun
Canoe trip
Frightening canoes
Heidi’s stories kept us calm
Overcame our fears
Crashed into branches
Fishing spraying wondering
Cat learned to steer yay!
Fun with waterguns
Fish Hooks flying through the air
Paddles racing fun
Beach
conquering the beach
Fish catching conquistador
while cold sharp waves crash
cold salt waves crashing
Unexploaded ordenance
spiky shelves of shells
Bright birds in the woods
A melody of their own
Crickets lead the tune

Yesterday we explored the banks of the Neuse river on our hike through Croatan. We found hunks of clay that line the ground and keep the bogs soggy. The cypress knees fascinated the kids. We’ll be working on a dance inspired by the knees. We wrote haikus and roasted marshmallows by the fire before bed last night.

The drive was long but incredibly scenic! We emptied the whole state of South Carolina of its junk food! Sarah taught us a beautiful round about constellations. We are thinking of forming a class choir…off to hike in the pocosins today. More later!
