Flying Airplanes and Singing Georgia Songs

photo1The first and second grade class has been off on another adventure! We took our first overnight trip of the school year. Monday morning we drove down south to Robins A.F.B. to visit the Museum of Aviation. Students were able to see airplanes dating back to the early 1900′s through today. They were also able to sit in the cockpits of at least three different airplanes. Too cool! We took a ride in a simulator. It took us on a 1920′s  barnstorming ride. We decided the plane flying through a lava filled cave was a bit of a stretch, but still pretty cool. Afterward we headed to a park to play for a while. Boy did we need it! We played for a long time. The students stayed with Mindy’s mom and dad in Macon. Many thanks to them and her sister Karen,  for dinner and desert. It was fun staying over.

The next day we went to the Georgia Music Hall of  Fame in downtown Macon. We learned all about famous GA musicans like Otis Redding, Ray Charles, the B-52′s and the Allman Brothers. Boy are we glad it didn’t rain.

The 1st/2nd grade class went to Spivey Hall this past Tuesday. We saw the African Dance Connection. Here are two excerpts from two of our students’ journals.

“This is the African Dance Connection. They are doing a rythme. We do it too. It is fuuuuuuuun!!!!! We saw a goose in a pond also.” MB

“This is a person in the African Dance Connection. She is playing a drum. The strap of the drum is holding the drum up. She is making a cool noise. I like the noise she is making. This is the song that we learned:

‘Ata ata ya-Ata ata ya- Ata ata ya -Ata ata’” LJ

“The classroom learned a new song. It is called “Ata ata ya.” We learned a new language. It is called Swahili. In Swahili, Jambo is hello.” AC

We look forward to Thrusday when we will visit Spivey Hall again.

Hello all,

On Monday, October 27th the Middle School and Junior High students along with Mindy, Stu, and Corrie, took a fabulous field trip to the beautiful Chicopee woods at the Elachee Nature Center in Gainsville.  We had been studying land navigation, or orienteering, in science and we took our aquired skills to Gainsville to try out Elachee’s orienteering course.  The students were given compasses and instructions and were expected to find there way through the Chicopee woods.  Luckily, a guide walked with us, for occasionally the group lost their bearings.  The students took turns leading the group off trail up and down steep ravines, up stream, 135 degrees for 100 feet, etc. until we made our way back to the Nature Center.  It was a blast.  Look forward to our next adventure.

Dear Parents,
Don’t forget: this Saturday, Nov.1 (8:00pm) at the Rialto Center for the Arts, ScrapArts Music — Phonk! (high voltage percussion) will be performing. We think this would be a great musical event for TAS kids — especially the 1/2 class with its tools/machines/inventions focus this year. We are inviting all school families to join us there for a fun evening. The tickets are expensive: $36, $26, but we think this event will be well worth saving up for. This is also a wonderful venue for children’s performances — no bad seats. Hope to see you there!

The 1/2 is keeping busy!

Last week we went to Seven Stages to see “The Little Prince.”  The children’s drawings in their sketchbooks are amazing. Stop by the classroom to take a look. The performace made a big impact on the chilren visually which is reflected in their drawings. Also the train sketches from Norfolk Southern are worth seeing. We are finishing up our two books, a collage on tools and machines and a water color of tools and machines pioneers used. We are also installing our covered wagons and oxen in the entrance hall. Be sure to see them this week at conferences.  Tomorrow we are off on another adventure as we head to the Atlanta Botanical Gardens. Thanks to Nancy, Max’s grandmother, for this wonderful treat.

Until next time,

The 1/2 class
