Check out the latest and greatest things going on in the K/1 class!

The first monthly newspaper has been published.  All of the articles and artwork have been written by the students.  Some of the highlights from the newsletter include: Valentine’s Day celebration, the Presidential Inauguration, performance reviews from 7 Stages and King Plow Arts Center, Visit from police officers and making slimy with Tim the Scientist.

The K/1 have also been busy learning about recycling and food composting.  As a result, we have built a composting box, with the help of one of our parents, Ace Ayalew.  The composting box will be kept on the Pre-K playground for the entire school community to dispose of ther fruit and vegetable food wastes.

In its 7th year, the TAS Running Club is still going strong! We currently have about 15 children who participate from grades Kindergarten through 5th.  Although it is called Running Club, the children do not have to run, they can walk if they choose.  They are encouraged to keep their bodies moving in an effort to promote good health and excercise habits.  During Running Club, the participants run/walk laps around the path at Springvale Park and receive a reward after a certain number of laps have been completed.  There is always great excitiement and a sense of accomplishment when this happens.  The last Running Club meeting for the Fall will be Monday, November 24 and will start again after Spring Break. In the Spring, the Running Club participants who are eligible work on preparing for the Peachtree Junior Road Race which is held in June at Piedmont Park.  As the year goes on, we look forward to many more days of running!

This year in K/1, our unit of study will be Social Studies, focusing first on our individual families and homes, their make-up, and how they are similar/different from each other. We will then explore our community, mainly looking at the community of Inman Park and surrounding neighborhoods. We will explore the different components of the neighborhood and why they are important. Lastly, we will study the United States, with most of the focus being on the states that the children are familiar with, have traveled to, or have lived in.

Since school has started, the K/1 class has been busy making paste paper books in art class.  The books are about themselves and is a representation of how they see themselves in this world.  We have also put together a classromm address book that contains the children’s addresses and pictures of their homes.

In Science class, the K/1 has been studying botany.  They have planted sunflower seeds and have been charting their growth.  They have also been experimenting with different types of soil and learning about what type of soil provides the best conditions for plant growth.  We recently took a trip to the State Farmer’s Market after reading the book Growing Vegetable Soup by Lois Ehlert.  At the farmer’s market, we picked out some of the vegetables mentioned in the book and brought them back to school to make vegetable soup!  It was quite an adventure for our first field trip of the school year!
